Since 2013, Drexel University’s Global Classroom program has provided a collaborative online international learning (COIL) experience for over 1,500 Drexel students and students from our international partners through over 55 courses. This session will cover the history of how the Global Classroom program was developed by the senior international office, the goals and impact of COIL at Drexel for both students and faculty, and the use of interaction, innovation, and interpretation to develop global communities and bridge students from different cultural backgrounds. Two case studies from Drexel faculty across disciplines (business/entrepreneurship and language learning) will be discussed as examples of COIL course development, synthesis, and expansion. Commonalities and unique differences between the two courses will be explored, and faculty will discuss how they developed partner relationships, engaged their students in project-based learning through COIL, and will provide evidence of success and expansion. Finally, the faculty panelists will explain how they leveraged these COIL courses into research of teaching and practice.

Many technology-based international exchanges end up being a one-and-done prospect. Once the novelty wears off or a faculty partner moves on to new opportunities, any progress gained is lost. East Carolina University’s award-winning Global Partners in Education (GPE) network utilizes a model in which partners actively engage in full semester courses, short term course enhancements, and other activities each semester. Approximately one quarter of our partners have been involved in GPE on a consistent basis for at least 10 years. Two-thirds have been involved for 5 years or more. Using a case study approach, attendees will identify techniques to leverage global partnerships to create a sustainable, scalable, Global Exchange Network. Attendees will then discuss strategies to enhance sustainability within their own programs.

“Connecticut CLICKs” is a case study of how innovative campus leadership in France and CT, a nonprofit consultant and a “friendly foreign government” jump-started our community college system’s internationalization effort creating a solid foundation with lessons and moral support from the COIL community. Starting in February 2016 from near-zero international capacity and flying in the face of major budget reductions and community college consolidations, three CT community colleges are launching our first CLICKs modules with two French IUT’s in Fall 2017, developing new modules for Spring 2018 and student and faculty travel with support of a French mobility grant run through APLU-NAFSA. Led by a seasoned college President, guided by our consultant Gazelle International, we have course design, faculty development and assessment tools along with a 3-5 year strategy for fund-raising and partnership development, anchoring CLICKs in a global studies certificate and building to internships, student and faculty exchange.
